Yes, it’s always fun to watch a video of a “finished” dog. My fascination lies in the method to get to final product. What works for one dog, may not work for another. Just this past week-end, Cheryl had an “ah-ha” moment with Talon. This past year, we had some difficulties with him leaving the line of departure for the courage test. We thought maybe we had been too hard on him at the line (he IS very sensitive unlike his dad!). We worked through it over the winter and summer and passed the Brevet last fall with FULL points on the courage test!
Cheryl believes that the problem with the courage tests comes from all the different cross-training we do for so many sports. The “ah-ha” moment was working on UKC-SDA exercises Saturday, and telling him “GET HIM!” while he’s on a 6 foot leash. That’s the same command I use for the send on the courage test. Cheryl said she felt he was/is confused because he is now being held back. I have to agree.
With my next dog (yes, there’s a next cuz I ain’t dead yet!), I will be using a different command for on-leash and off leash “attack” command. I’m sure the dog will learn it quicker than I will. Twenty plus years of doing it one way is hard to relearn.
Anyhoo….I guess my point is, nothing can replace the REAL experts. Anyone can put a video on the internet.
