FINDING CELL PHONES IN JAILS
Most corrections experts will tell you that cell phones are troublesome contraband in a jail or prison. Inmates can use them to run criminal enterprises on the outside, threaten witnesses, and warn other inmates about the movements of corrections personnel within the facility.
The State of Maryland has tackled the problem by training dogs to sniff out cell phones smuggled into jails and prisons. They have three cell phone-seeking dogs; Tazz, Rudd, and Alba. Trainers have taught the dogs to sniff out cell phones with the same techniques used to teach dogs to search for drugs. The trainers say they arent sure what parts of the phones the dogs detect. All they know is, the cell-phone-sniffing dog program is working. In a recent demonstration, the dogs found over half a dozen secreted cell phones in less than 30 seconds each.
