Yes Eric…it will be “see ya later”.
Years ago (1980’s), I wasn’t necessarily in the “been there, done that” stage, but was at the stage where our boys were into sports, etc., and our need was to be there for them, so we stopped training and trialing for several years.
But, when silly us, went back to Cheryl for a pup (1998), we ended up with Ramsey, and before we knew it, I was training and trialing again. Now, we have 4 dogs, 2 working, 2 retired, and 4 (soon to be 5!) grandkids!
Training and trialing is so enjoyable now because I don’t have to prove anything to anyone or myself. I enjoy working on “problems” and just doing fun stuff like “attacks across the pond”. It’s also a thrill to me to have my boys, their wives and all the grandkids come to the DSO to watch Grandpa and Grandma “play” with their dogs.
We are so fortunate to have our club training within 20 miles of us, along with some young, willing, talented and safe decoys. Not to mention having the best training director in the country!
I had Lori ask me the other day what breed of dog I would train if I couldn’t have a Malinois. I did a little mental math that Talon still has 5 or 6 years in him, which would put me close to (gasp!) 60……did I want another dog to start at that age? Yup….as long as I’m physically able, I’ll be out there enjoying the time with my four-footed and two-footed friends and family.
Enjoy and treasure the time with your family each and every day.
I KNOW we will see you again Airman……in your tye dye.
