It's a fun sport, with a lot of different types... water work (ducks and geese, but focus in field trials is on ducks) Directed retrieving trials, and Hunting certificates. You can also look into the trailing dogs for raccoon, or even the earth dogs, too. Actual "Field trial" dogs are usually run with the owners, judges and spectators on horses, so there's a bit more to deal with there. I've worked on problems with different field trial dogs, from bad retrieving skills, to obedience problems. I can tell you that it is very much how good your dog is... training is necessary, but you can't get a decent result without a good dog... very similar to French Ring!
