What an awful story. I'd like to add something I heard in a puppy class once. A club member's older dog dashed across the street and she called it back. It came back without hesitation (great recall), only to be hit and killed crossing the road on the way back.
I saw the very practical application of a voraus once in a hotel. I had gone to get ice and one of my kids beat my husband to the door to let me back into the room. Of course, my dog bolted into the hallway. I called him back, but he was sprinting and completely deaf. So, I hollered PLATZ!!!!!!!!!! which he DID obey instantly, and he held the down until I got to him.
(Now, if only I could get a voraus like that in a trial......)
But it worked. There's nothing like a reliable recall, but a good down at a distance can be just as valuable. Depends on the situation.
