Posted by Julie I specifically like the one under the walking/jogging heading where it is recommended that you walk with a friend or a GERMAN SHEPHERD! ================================ Refuse to be a victim of crime 1. You are personally responsible for your own protection and safety. 2. Stay alert to your surroundings 3. Plan Your Travel: Know exactly where you’re going and the safest way to get there. 4. Use all of your senses to detect suspicious persons or situations. 5. Trust your intuition. Security at Home 1. Keep your house locked even when you are working outside. Keep your garage and/or shed locked. 2. Keep drapes and shades closed after dark. 3. At night, leave lights on in two or more rooms to show people are home. 4. Install good lighting at the garage and entrances. Utilize timers/motion sensors. 5. Trim tree branches so there is no access to upper windows. Trims shrubs to avoid giving burglars cover. 6. When advertising valuable items, give only your phone number, not your street address. 7. Consider installing an electronic security system to monitor for burglary, fire and personal emergencies. 8. Be very suspicious of unsolicited visitors: • Ask salesmen, repairmen, and even Police Officers wanting in your home to show identification. • If a stranger asks to use your phone, do not let him/her in your home. Offer to call emergency help for him. 9. If you think a prowler is outside your home, stay inside, turn on your lights and phone the police right away. Do not call out to him. 10. If a prowler gets in your home get out through another door or window if possible and call the police from a safe place. If trapped by an intruder, let him steal what he wants. Do what ever is necessary to defend yourself. In Your Vehicle: 1) Park in well lit areas. 2) If you must leave a key with a parking attendant, leave only the ignition key. Do not leave anything attached to it with your name and address. 3) Don’t park next to vans, particularly next to a sliding door. They offer too much cover for an assailant. 4) Approach your vehicle with your keys already in your hand. 5) From 30 to 40 feet away, check under your vehicle. Check inside your vehicle before entering it, even when you go in the store or gas station for just a short time. 6) Check around the vehicle for suspicious activity or persons loitering. If you see someone, walk past the vehicle or return to the building and get help. 7) Be suspicious of anyone approaching your vehicle. Keep doors locked and windows up. When Walking or Jogging: 1) Plan the safest route. Avoid vacant buildings/lots, alleys and construction sites. 2) Know the area. 3) Arrange to walk with a friend (or a German Shepherd). 4) Carry your purse close to your body. 5) Don’t wear expensive jewelry or flash cash. 6) Don’t overburden yourself with large packages or groceries that make it hard to react. 7) If you suspect you are being followed, cross the street and head for the nearest populated area. 8) Have your keys ready before you reach your front door.
