Posted by Chris Fraize Thanks for the kind words on the video. My wife (April) and I edit and produce them ourselves. The civil exercise in the video (at the M.A.D. Summer challenge 06 advanced level) that you asked about is there to show that the dog can/will maintain a civil display under environmental distractions (Balloons and Silly string) as well as show a strong civil display on command while a decoy maintains an almost passive (mildly physical) although verbally threatening demeanor towards the handler. Many dogs have a very intimidating civil display when the decoy is very aggressive and while the decoy works (agitates) the dog. We are looking for the dog to demonstrate a strong civil display on the decoy with minimal agitation by the decoy (at the advanced level) while the decoy works the handler NOT the dog. The party was just a “theme” we used last year. It gives us a chance to use common everyday objects as environmental distractions. This year (as with the DSO) the theme will be different. We want the dog to alert and display when commanded to by the owner/handler. We are by no means implying that people should teach their dogs to alert to the environmental stimulation or non-threatening actions of a partygoer. Again, the threat here was verbal and the environmental (silly string and balloons) are to test is the dog will stay on task (civil). The handler is given these instructions; if the decoy makes you feel threatened in word or in deed you as the handler can command your dog to demonstrate a civil display in order to make the bad guy (decoy) think twice about physically touching you. What can’t be heard on the video is the decoy making threatening comments to the handler. Safe Training,
