Posted by Kathy Walden What do you think Cheryl? Up till now, with the ferrets, she would roll over on her back and let them run on her belly and lick them. She'd get a little amped up, and then we'd end the play session when she used her paws too much. But she never saw them as prey (yet). Thanks. Kathy (now fully dressed).

Well, my girl is officially a full-grown female Belgian Malinois DOG (no baby or girl after today). At 8:00 am I opened the back door to let her out, and her usual path is to tear around the corner to get at any squirrels who may be trespassing -they're crafty little devils, and devote their lives to tormenting her. But today, it was a woodchuck. So when I heard a commotion and two animal sounds, I followed at breakneck pace (again, picture me in my delicate nighty and little slippers). There's my, up till then, baby Winnie with a woodchuck in her mouth, shaking it to death. So I'm trying to get her to release it because the last thing I wanted was to have to get stitches for her from a woodchuck bite. With Winnie happily carrying an already very-dead woodchuck in her mouth all over the yard, me in my nightgown screaming "OUT, OUT, OUT!!!" at 8:00 am. I hope my neighbors were all asleep or at work. So she finally outed very reluctantly; she didn't have a scratch on her. I'm kind of conflicted. On the one hand, I'm so proud of my dog who obviously made a huge step today, and knew it too. But the part of me who loves small animals (especially one that looks alot like ferrets!), I am rather mortified. But I'll get over it. I own a Belgian Shepherd Dog, and that's the most important thing. She was so happy!!! I can't take that away from her. Also, now I know that although till now she's been playing with the ferrets nicely, her prey drive may override the play instinct if she sees them run away.
Also, with regard to the woodchuck, are they safe for Winnie to eat (as far as parasites are concerned). Should I let her eat her kill?
