Alternate to PWM

Hi, Using an incoming DMX signal, I want to digitally (i.e. from a processor) control and dim a basic LED. I'm familiar with PWM, but does anybody know of another way to digitally dim a light source other than using PWM? Any help would be great. thanks. brian
