A point to note:
What Light are you using ?
You have to remember that every DMX fixture has it's own personality..that is , in order to turn on a light, you MAY have to send specific data to specific channels. For instance, Channel 1 may be the Shutter channel which might need &h7F to turn the shutter full open and then &hFF on channel 12 to put the DImmer to full.
Sometimes , you may even need to strike the lamp remotely; there will be a channel to cater to this and usually that would involve a bit of time specific data transmisssion ..like taking the channel to &h80 for 4 secs and then back to &h00 !
So take a look at the fixture's personality file and check what data values you need to send to which channels to turn the light on
