Quite late I realise, but since I found it quite high in google, I thought I'd react by saying that microchip.com hosts a nice collection of walkthroughs on (serial) communication on their 16F and 18F family, including a step by step guide of making a DMX sender and receiver on a 18F, which with minor changes runs on many of the 16F family as well.
