I used to be tinkering with the concept of doing a game with sprite based characters. Nope. You must remember that you have to draw a separate frame for each action, which is a lenghty process. Sure, falling would only code about 5 or so frames from front-view only, but other things should be implemented first...Blake Stone has a feature like this one. Some guards fall down after being shot (for a while) and the effect is interesting.
