Different religions was a big deal then, too. My first boyfriend's mother told me point blank we wouldn't be compatible because we were different religions. I had been brought up third generation secular, no formal practices, but his family did. Thirty years later, his mother told me she was sorry, she should not have butted in. And what I find astounding is that this young man with whom I went to church, celebrated his holidays, was willing to accept his religion as I felt I had none of my own, is now an atheist.
