Sadly, I saw similar things when I volunteered at Elmhurst City Hosp. People with no hope of recovery, suffering or already in a comatose state whose family would not let them go. It's like they hope some kind of miracle will happen and the loved one will suddenly get better. I also think guilt may play a part. They don't want to be the one to say "Enough is enough!" and stop treatment. They may fear what people will say or think of them.
