I didn't use electric alone. We had a 4' chicken wire fence with a string of electric 4" above the top. It even kept out coons. 
The crows and earworms would get whatever corn survived our summer droughts. I gave up on corn. To save my pears from small furry critters I strung electric around the pear tree for 5' of the trunk. The birds got some of the pears but there were plenty for me to can. Yes, I still have my ancient fencer and it still works.
