Bless whoever invented the little silver needle threader thingie! Without it Da Spouse would not have a single button on any of his shirts. He seems to lose buttons in fits and spurts, and there were a couple of shirts needing attention ... without the little silver needle threader thingie they would STILL need attention. I mean, as far as I'm concerned, needles haven't had eyes in several years, and were it not for that little silver neele threader thingie, we'd be paying the alteration lady a small fortune to sew on errant cuff, collar, and placket buttons.
Which leads me to a memory - Nana's button tin. I think most grandmothers had tins or jars of miscellaneous, and quite wonderful, buttons. When I was little I coould amuse myself for what seemed like hours, sitting on the floor and sorting buttons ... dreaming about the dresses that the elaborate ones might have adorned, and rather callously dismissing the plain, plebian shirt buttons. I've had an old cookie tin of my own for years now - filled to the brim with buttons, some of which go back to that tin that belonged to my Nana. Somehow, now that I'm going to be a grandmother, my battered old button tin has become immensely more significant, knowing that in a few years, my grandchild might well be sitting on the floor sorting its quite wondrous contents.
