I've heard this before but why? Does it have to do with airflow through the brick? I took my idea from Stambaugh Stadium at YSU, all the interior brick offices, well, it's like a gym inside the building, are all painted brightly in the school colors. Gray brick is pretty boring so I painted the two basement utility rooms bright yellow, two coats really thick, and it has looked great since 1985! Now, when I remove the pine board from the recreation room it will be all brick again too, so the whole basement will again be brick. I want to finally go all the way around with GOOD insulation first and then put up strong modern paneling. If I redo the ceilings it will be a complete restoration.
