... if it would look crappy to split the basement, half tile and half laminate wood or carpet. It's actually two large rooms divided by a concrete (brick) wall. One side is still all painted brick, all utility space, the shower, a toilet and the furnace in back, divided only by the staircase, with the other end of the same room containing wash tubs, washing machine, gas stove and small extra refrigerator. This side would be tiled. The other side of the brick wall is additional living space we call the recreation room, the walls have been finished with wood and it is divided by another wooden wall which I'll probably take out, making it one large room. Right now one side of the wooden wall has a bed, the other side a couch, chair, TV, this computer, etc.
All I'm saying is one side (of the brick wall) can be kept for utility space and tiled (or whatever) because the floor is still concrete ... and the other side, the living space side, could stand alone with a different color of laminate wood or carpet.
If I make it two rooms then the tiled side would only have to match the steps to look good. The steps were done originally with vinyl and match the upstairs kitchen floor, and I'm redoing the upstairs kitchen floor too, so I just want the upstairs kitchen and steps to the basement done with the same color of flooring. Then a second matching color (different color but still kinda matching the steps) would be used for the utility side. And finally, the living space side I'll do at greater expense, with wood, carpet or whatever, and it doesn't have to match the utility side at all.
Am I confusing you? The two rooms don't have to match and would look good, I think, being done with different floors. Don't forget, this is a small house, just a two bedroom matchbox, so the downstairs living space is important, it is used (by me anyhow) more than the upstairs living room.
I'm going to Loews and Home Depot on Tuesday with good neighbor Dave. He really knows this stuff well and will probably do most of the work, he'll need to teach me what to do as far as ripping out all the old wood paneling (rec room side), insulating, and refinishing the brick walls with new wood, and then doing the floors probably last.
I'm still wide open to all ideas. Your post/concern is greatly appreciated!
