Updates and rules for the Coverdog Points Program sponsored by Purina

Posted by Coverdog Points Committee on 7/5/2023, 3:53 pm

Below are the rules for the 2023/24 Coverdog Points program sponsored by Purina. The committee has added one rule change effective the 2023/24 season. It states, In order to win the award a derby must have at least one placement where a grouse and/or woodcock was pointed. With this new rule it is important that the club secratary or person sending in Essential Data forms make a note on the form next to each placement as to if a grouse or woodcock was pointed or if it was a call back on quail. Single or multiple course derby stakes that have a callback on quail still count for full points. If a single course derby stake has a callback on wild birds and a grouse or woodcock was pointed that counts as a placement where a wild bird was pointed.

One trial was added to the Coverdog Points Program effective the 2023/24 points season. That trial is the North Country Championship and it’s accompanied derby stake.

    Two other important notes…
    1. a Coverdog Points stake must be advertised as such. It is explained under rule 6)
    2. In the past clubs have not always sent in their data for points stakes in a timely manner. Rule 7) states that points must be submitted within 30 days of completion of the trial or points for that trial will be forfeited. There will be no exceptions to that rule going forward.

We will do our best to send a copy of the updated rules to each club secretary. If you do not receive a copy please contact Coverdog Points program secretary.

Rules for the Coverdog Points program
    Sponsored by Purina

The formula by which the Coverdog of the Year and Coverdog Handler of the Year, Sponsored by Purina are calculated as follows:

Champion: 12 X the number of dogs.
Runner Up: 8 X the number of dogs

The Coverdog of the Year and the Coverdog Handler of the Year Award tracks open grouse and woodcock championships,

The overall rules for the awards are that the trials must be open, pay a significant purse, and must not limit entries. Championships generally do not limit entries anyhow, so most of these apply to derby stakes.

    1. All Open approved Championships that run on Ruffed grouse and/or North American Woodcock count for points. .
    2. The trial must not limit entries or refuse any eligible runnable dogs as defined by The Minimum Requirements For Dogs.
    3. A purse deemed significant must awarded to the winning handlers.
    4. A new club or a new stake must be run for two years to have a chance to be points eligible. Then club must apply to points comittee in order to receive Purina Points. The club should run in accordance to the other listed criteria during this period to best assure points eligibility during this probationary period. If a points stake is not held for two years its status will revert back to the above mentioned probationary period.
    5. Significant format changes of a stake which may result in a significant points swing may also take 2 years until the higher points kick in.
    6. All approved points stakes must include, Coverdog Points Program Sponsored by Purina in the field trial ad.
7.Essential data forms for Points trials must be submitted to Points Committee Secretary within 30 days from the completion of the trial. Failure to do so will result in Points for that trial being forfeited

    Points are awarded as follows:
    Champion: 12 X # of entries.
    Runner up: 8 X # of entries

Should a championship stake be reverted to a shooting dog stake no points will be awarded.

    Derby Points

    1. A derby stake must be scheduled and run in conjunction with a scheduled and officially recognized open, all-breed, all-age, broke dog stake in order to be eligible for points.
    2. The trial must not limit entries or refuse any eligible runnable dogs as defined by The Minimum Requirements For Dogs.
    3. A purse deemed significant must awarded to the winning handlers.
    4. Each club will receive points for one stake in the fall and one stake in the spring.
5.A new club or a new stake must be run for two years to have a chance to be points eligible. The club should run in accordance to the other listed criteria during this period to best assure points eligibility during this probationary period.. If a points stake is not held for two years its status will revert back to the above mentioned probationary period.
    6. Significant format changes of a stake which may result in significant points swing may also take 2 years until the higher points kick in.
    7. The points shall be calculated as follows:
    1/2 hour:
    First Place: 4 X # of entries.
    Second Place: 2 X # of entries.
    Third Place: 1 X # of entries.
    Grouse Futurity Points, First
Place 6, Second Place 4, Third Place 2
One hour stakes receive double the points.
    8. In order to win the award a derby must have at least one placement where a grouse and/or woodcock was pointed.

Any new rules or points trial shall require a majority vote by the committe to enact. In the case of a tie the secratary casts a vote to break the tie

Rules,Rules,Rules, I commend the GNGC Rules Committee for change that makes perfect sense. to have the Derby of the Year have to point wild birds. I'm lucky to be close to wild, and not to many " Boxed Birds" as my friend in Kansas calls them, God Bless Donny Gerstner
      Great change, more are needed
