Does a dog need to qualify for this trial? I'm trying to setup a hunting trip and running(donating money) in a coverdog trial during the trip would be great.

Yes to run in cover dog and other championships your dog has to be qualified. The dog needs a placement in a derby or a shooting dog stake. Some trials may require other placements but this is the general rule.
