    Need some clarification Please

Posted by mattv on 5/4/2021, 11:33 am

Recently looked at the requirements for the Puppy Class and they seemed reasonable. Then, talking to a guy he said " If your doing to run puppy at the 1.5 year old limit you better be showing broke work" I'm just trying to understand what is really expected. Yep, your right a Nicky new guy here but I'm retired have time and been around dogs. So, just trying to understand what I need to be looking at. Thanks for your help.

Who told you that. No, really we have to know so we can ask this fool what the hell he means.

      Got that off my chest!

You should go to the AFTCA web sight and download the "Standards to field trial procedure". Then you won't have dummasses telling you such crap. Guess I haven't gotten it all out yet. The Standards booklet will help a lot. Here you go, It doesn't matter what the age of the puppy is, NO birds are liberated for a puppy stakes and no bird work is expected or taken into judgement. All a puppy must do is run and handle to the front, show a reasonable sense of independence for their age, show desire to hunt and promise as a developing dog.

Agree with Jim's response; NO puppies have ANY "bird work" as a requirement!!!

In my opinion, the Puppy stake is the hardest to judge for that reason and the fact that one judges style, class, and potential.

Actually, I was at a NSTRA Trial to see if it held any intertest for me and was chatting with a guy there about Cover Dog trials and he gave me that bit of I guess, dis-information. I have never been to a Cover Dog trial and there aren't any around here in Ohio that I know of.

I do enjoy chasing grouse up in Michigan, I guess I need to drive up there, find a trial and see what they are all about.

Thanks for the heads up on the "The Standards To Field Trial Procedure" and thanks for the info.

Cover dog trial is a subjective description of a walking trial. "Cover" is in the eye of the beholder. Most "Cover Dog" trials are Championships on wild birds, grouse or woodcock. Some derby stakes are held on wild bird but usually if not always as a companion stakes to a Championship. But derby stakes of 1/2 hour on multiple courses can be tough. Regardless, even cover dog puppy stakes won't be held on birds

Although Jim is correct in regards to the fall trials here in New England, the spring trials at Gladwin in Michigan run a full slate of stakes (Puppy, Derby, shooting dog) w/out a CH being run concurrently. They also regularly run derby and puppies in the fall with their Championship series. That would most likely be the closest place for you to go and walk braces to see what it's all about.
