Dog Chest Protector

Last Christmas, I was given a Cabela's Ripstop Chest Protector vest for my dog that I hadn't used all year. I recently dug it out of my tickle trunk and have had it on my dog for safety most times we have been out this fall during deer season. What a difference this vest makes on my dog's wear and tear!

This morning we were out for over an hour in thick old growth berry canes. My hands took a beating from the thorns and prickles but the dog hardly has a scratch on him. It takes him a few minutes to get use to running with the vest on, but after that he seems to forget he's wearing it.

If anyone is thinking about getting a vest for their dog, I highly recommend this one. It is really well made and has cut my dog's healing time way down.

Just a quick question........are they size adjustable or do you have to have seperate ones for different dogs?

The sizes run as follows:

Small: 30-45 lbs
Medium: 45-65 lbs
Large: 65+ lbs

My pointer runs about 60 lbs and the medium is a good fit. The 3 straps are adjustable and allow for the dog's broad chest. I looked at a few others and they didn't look like they would stay on, but this one seems to be doing the trick. It also makes him super easy to locate in thick cover so I can get to him faster, sometimes even before the grouse take off.

Check out a dog vest made by Sylmar. My father uses them on his brittanies and they seem to work well.

I laughed at the vest myself when it was given to me last year. Thought it looked rather funny. But my dog is usually belly raw at the end of our runs. A few weeks back, at the start of deer season, he jumped an old barbed wire fence and his belly got ripped up pretty good. About an inch gash in his chest and a scrape full length to his boys. So I dug out the vest. Surprisingly he took to it pretty quick.

Most of the time we run in cover that is so thick no sane person would go through it. But we always seem to find birds in the thick spots. Besides, if all of our birds sat on the side of the road or the edge of our fields I wouldn't even use a dog to find them. Maybe there's just a bit of difference in the 'cover' that our 'cover' dogs get into.

No doubt a good product especially after seeing Dave Palmer's white b###h all cut up... Ask Dave, we get plenty cut up down here on the "SHORE". He's been here and seen where I hunt a dog. I think he and his partner from Maine were a bit surprised. Belle didn't learn to avoid cover down here for sure.

By the way, the dog in the photo... not mine. He's way too pretty and he's out in the open. Peel some hide off him and throw him in a mud bog and he might pass. Funny, he was clean and white when I got him as a pup. Don't think he's been that clean since.

This one was mine and this picture taken when she was 14... Bred by Doc Boser. A good one in anybody's book. Just got her ashes back on Friday. Couldn't get to the vets for a year and pick 'em up. The thought of it choked me up.
The door is always open for visitors here. Several of our dogs are up north in the woods... More than a few are down in Texas in the shinery.

I'd post a picture of mine but there's no sense. It would just look like pucker brush and prickle bushes and you wouldn't see the dog!

That's the beauty of this board. We all get to compare notes. Post away. It floats my boat to see dogs in natural cover from around the country. Some of my favorite shots are of the setters up in the Northwest Territory. AWESOME. Because of my job, lifestyle etc. I don't get to travel and enjoy the diversity of our sport enough and live vicariously through those types of photos. Man, it's great. I've got every darn tape, book etc. on the subject. Bird dogs are a consumate passion for me. I was just joshin' ya about the vest. It struck me comedically not with any bad intention. My daughters are always dressing the pups up around here especially when they were younger. I've got a picture of Carl Bergen's Roxy dog who was raised here in a baby crib, with a receiving blanket wrapped around her as a pup. Bulltown's grandmomma, Sondad Sandee, used to be a regular "TEA PARTY" participant at Katie's playtime get togethers. She sat at the little table like a real guest. Post away Dale!

Jan, your a good sport and I'm just playin' with ya. Keep the photos coming cuz we all love to see them.

If my dog was 100% broke I'd be snappin photos too. As it is, I have a ton of photos of everyone else's dogs and none of my own. Or maybe I have no friends and that's why no ones takin pictures of us! Haha
