Elhew Stud Dog Opinion

I have a female I'm thinking of breeding soon she is getting up there in age and I realy would like to get a pup out of her before it's to late.
I would like to know your thoughts on who you think are good Elhew stud dogs out there live or by frozen semen and who's pup's will market good. Like I said I'm going to keep a pup or two but not all of them and the puppy market is not the best right now. thanks

Looks like Elhew Signature should be considered. He is a first year shooting dog with 2 RU championship wins and over 20 derby and shooting dog wins. He is out of Elhew Comanche and CH Miss Fearless Scooter a fabulous Elhew/Dunn's b###h owned by Greg Isenberg. Hopefully she is bred again with pups due in January.

Vagas answered your question. I must put in a plug for Ch Miss Fearless Scooter, Sig's dam. She is a gorgeous, fast, classy, Elhew/Dunn b###h that has taken my measure several times over the last few years. She is owned by Greg Isenberg of Blountville, TN and hopefully is currently bred to Elhew Comanche again.

Look at Elhew Sinbad

Haven't seen him since he was a derby, but he learned to "really hunt" quicker than any young dog I have seen. Andy mentioned the other day that he runs as pretty as any dog he has seen.

I don't know really who he was (other than a littermate or son of Elhew Strike) or even if he was any good, but I have 5 straws of a dog called Elhew Flint. He likely doesn't work with my breeding program, but if someone with a Elhew prefixed or closely bred Elhew female wants a couple of straws to try, I would like to see what a pup looks like.

How did you come by Elhew Flint's sperm? I know there were two guys that owned him,one lives in Mo and the other lives in Illinois I think.From what I hear he was every bit the dog that Strike and Dancing Gypsey was,his brother and sister.

I went to MO three years ago with hopes of getting my first Elhew dog. Keno (Elhew Jefferson x Elhew ???) did not work out for field trials. I gave Keno away to a friend who lost his bird dog early part of 2007.

I know many on this board have up coming litters to pick from, I will keep my eye out for any new post with wheelping dates after 1/1/10. My Bxxxh came into her second heat cycle 10-6-09 giving the litter a bad wheelping date. I will not breed her if pups are not wheelped JAN-May. I hope her fourth cycle will be early NOV 2010.

Let's talk about the Elhew Flint sperm. I've got a real good b###h to breed to it. Littermate to Strike and Gypsy, right out of Hook's Bounty Hunter AND behind the CH FRONT N CENTER dog... He was a beauty. Good derby, screwed up later and sold by Wehle finally to a fellow in Missouri I believe who is a confirmed COYOTE HUNTER nowadays. I spoke to him recently after reading about his exploits on the net.

If you're looking to sell pups then go to what is generally referred to as "the stud of the year" If you're looking to improve what your b###h brings to the equation then I'd consider Joe Cammisa's young dog Vinnie. He's the real deal. In fact we like him so much we're considering looking at a few pointer b###hes to add to the kennel specifically to breeed to him.

Jeff,

I have a 20 month old daughter of Elhew Sinbad, and I'm very pleased with her. She found one covey of quail and a woodcock two weeks ago in a 2 hour workout with a 3-1/2 year old dog on the ground. He too found a woodcock and a covey of quail, but to essentially split the field with a veteran bird dog, I was ecstatic.

Truly depends on your b###h. What do you want to accomplish? What are her strengths and weaknesses as a bird dog, physical specimen, mentally from a training perspective etc. I'd think you might want to compliment her positive attributes and more importantly compensate for her weaknesses. How is she bred? So many things to consider. Asking a question like yours is like asking a physician to diagnose your condition over the phone and telling him your stomach hurts.

She was a cover dog and now she's used to hunt pheasants in the midwest. I would like to see a little more speed out of her and a little more drive things I like about her is she hunts for you is very good in the kennel and is very personal and are things I want to keep. How is she bred she is out of Snakefoot and a Seawolf b###h. The dog in Field Trial Magazine summer 2009 with the flying woodcock thats her.

If speed and drive is what you are looking for, get ahold of Sheldon Twer at Twer Kennels. He handles a champion linebred Elhew by the name of Elite Poker Face. Not prefixed, but ever bit of an Elhew stud who is producing winners.

I've seen this picture quite a few times, and with the same initial response...WOW! I haven't had the opportunity to see him run because he's on the other side of the country from me (CA I think), but what a magnificent looking animal and a 2X CH in his first season as a Shooting Dog!

Did he qualify for the invitational this year? I hope so, i'll be down there and would like to see him run. Here is another reason, IMO, that the National Championship should change venues. There are dogs that are on the west coast that don't make the trip to NC.

With the attributes you are looking for, you might try Paul Horchen with Elhew Thunderhead...He was co-owned by Arron Horchen and Wehle and was bought out by Paul and Arron. You might want to talk to Paul about "Ted's" pedigree, but it looks like a fit. He is quite a bird dog, has personality, speed and drive.

Paul and Arron owned and campaigned Beaver Meadow Bette and own the Beaver Meadow Kennel name.

I am no Elhew expert, but I seem to recall that Sinbad was out of Island Grove Brute. If you are looking for power and drive, Brute most assuredly brought that to the dance.

The thing that Brute really brought to the table was bird sense, his composure around game was unbelievable and very natural. Sinbad's dam was every bit if not more powerful than his sire. Both were greatdogs and I have seen many Sinbad pups that would lead me to believe he would be a great choice as a stud dog.

I would say so. His dam side is, I believe linebred Elhew for the most part. It is well known that Mr. Whele chose his best, most typey females for outbreeding in an effort to gain what the stud dog had to offer while still minitaing the quailties he had patiently bred into his line.

I see very little that is different here.

He is just as much ELHEW as the product of any of Mr. Whele's crosses to Dunn's Fearless Bud, Hook's Bounty Hunter, and a number of others.
Let's take Elhew Fibber McGee as an example. Is HE Elhew bred? Or is he Hook's Bounty Hunter and Dunn's Fearless Bud bred? Does it really matter?
Just the same as the dogs out of Numark Megan(who was Pork Roll bred) are considered Miller breeding and not pork Roll breeding? Again, aside from a marketing viewpoint...does it matter? Sematincs and salesmanship does not make a dog. Good breeding does.

Guard Rail, due to the Elhew influence of Smart, is something of a special case in my mind. Not a complete outcross to Elhew. Perhaps that is why it worked so well.

Whatever you may call it, I saw Brute run a couple of times and he was impressive. I would say he has the potential to bring much of what is desirable in the Elhew line from his dam's side along with the strengths of his sire to the mixture.

I just bred a very nice female to him on Wednesday. She is bred the same as the female I just bred to Fibber (Blackhawk x Guard Rail daughter). I am hoping for some nice "Elhew" pups from both sires.

There are enough folks out there that still remember Bob and what he might have bred to or not... I'll warrant you this one, he had the opportunity to breed BARSHOE BRUTE or WHIPPORWILL REBEL and passed. IMHO, I doubt he would've bred his grandson and great grandson respectively. It would be interesting to hear from those folks that knew him and what he looked for in a potential stud dog for outcross purposes. BTW, Smoky wasn't as much of an outcross as many would like to imagine and that element was one of the reasons Wehle was drawn to him amongst other things including his CONFORMATION.
