I believe the thing that Mr. Whele did for the pointer breed was to allow us to put away the club. The old joke used to be... (pointer owner) "My dog listens just fine." But(the pundit asks) then what is the 2X4 for? (the ponte owner replies)"Heck that is just to get his attention!"

that is no longer true I believe.
He bred a dog that wanted to stay with you and wanted to please. He bred a dog that was smart, by pointer standards. In concert with the advent of the modern, variable intensity e-collar, the Elhew influence has allowed knowledgeable trainers to bring along these youngsters with minimal pressure, allowing them to retain and exhibit very high levels of style and class.
