Thanks for the advise so far; except for Chris. Chris you go to Hell! you go to Hell and you die!

For some additional info I thought it might be the cable/pedels/guitar so I unplugged them from the input to the amp and it still happens thus ruleing them out so it's something with the amp itself.
The amp isn't particuly old so it's probably not what Alec suggested.
I'll open it up tonight (pain that that'll be fully enclosed stupid arse thing!) and have a poke round see if there is anything obvious.
