Posted by Anna Eng Why am I telling you this? I guess I just don't want to see any clubs get discouraged because they don't have a coach. Anyone can be a coach. You don't have to be a great swimmer to be a great coach. Take the certification courses for judges or coaches. Use the web board for coaches on the education page of this website. Get materials from the national office. Ask a coach or judge to take a look at a tape that you send them. Have the lifeguard video tape you or tell you if you are vertical or not (believe or not - I have done this from time to time). You have to be creative, and remember that every little bit helps. And just a side note: to all my friends out there (former teammates, former opponents) who used to swim and who I never see involved in synchro, where are you? Please come back to the sport!!! There are so many of you out there that could make amazing contributions to our sport. I know that we are all busy, but even just two hours once a week can make a huge impact. That's all the time I had to work with Penn last year and they did an outstanding job taking care of the rest. If there are more of us who give a little, no one person has to really give a lot (unless of course they want to, or are just psychotic like me!) Sorry, I hope that wasn't too much of a soapbox. I love collegiate synchro and I know there are plenty of others out there who feel the same way. It needs our help if it is going to get stronger.

As someone who loves collegiate synchro dearly, it makes me so happy to hear that there are so many clubs trying to get started and grow stronger. My mother and I started my age-group team when I was a freshman in high school and the past two years I helped the swimmers at Penn build up their club, so I know how much effort it really takes. I never really had a steady coach in age-groups and I even went to some national meets without one. I wasn't a great swimmer, but I still tried to do everything I could to get better and make the team stronger.
