I dont have much experience but it sounds like your liquid to powder ratio and ball size is off. As for the long nails the only thing I can think of is to do the 3 ball method since the persons nails are long it probably will take more balls to cover them but i feel like if you do that then the acrylic thickness on the whole nail will be the same or very close to it. start at the nail tip and take your time. gentle pat the acrylic when you get it the way you want lightly smooth it out then put the 2nd ball right behind it and gently pat that the way you want it then lightly blend it in the 1st ball(the way you do nailpolish). for each ball keep doing that til you get close to the cuticle area. then after that just blend all the balls by using a wet ball and cover the entire nail. i hope that helps you out in some way.
