Posted by Emma on 1/1/2005, 8:47 am, in reply to "Pain relief--" a) I have read that there can be anti-clotting effects; c) there are other, better, safer alternatives for post-surgical pain relief. Vets start whipping out Rimadyl, etc. and it starts to sound normal. Most pet owners aren't likely to do a lot of research or question the next time a vet says "Rimadyl" for another dog.

I do think pain relief can be a good thing, but what bothers me the most about the use of Rimadyl, Deramaxx, etc. for post-surgical patients is
b) as has been demonstrated particularly w Deramaxx, it seems that some individuals will do fine; others will develop life-threatening side effects almost immediately. There is no way to predict which will be which. If a dog/cat is acting lethargic the day after surgery, is it just post-surgical normalness or a side effect of the pain med? How is a pet owner to know? If the stool is dark after a dental, is that from normal bleeding from extractions or is the dog in serious trouble?
