Posted by Noofies on 12/30/2004, 4:17 pm, in reply to "Deramaxx, Vioxx, Celebrex--" (When I picked him up we did the discharge stuff first and I overheard one vet in the hallway say "oh, he was the last one done today, I bet he's not even fully awake yet....". When the vet doing the discharge came back with the pup, she was laughing - not only was he awake he was wriggling from head to toe and READY TO GO, MOM!!! Nice tidy little incision, precisely spaced and neatly tied sutures - I know exactly which vet did the surgery. I wish she did ALL the surgeries.) Took an 8-year old little something mix in for a dental a couple of weeks ago. He lost 5 teeth, including one where they'd put in a single suture to close the socket. I was handed Rimadyl with that discharge, too. Again, I refused it. If his mouth hurt - and I'm sure it must have, at least the day after the dental when the pain injection had worn off - it didn't stop him from eating three LARGE meals (making up for what he couldn't eat when his teeth were bad) with great enthusiasm. There are so many, many safe and effective options for pain relief and reduction of inflammation, I can't understand why powerful pharmaceuticals are the first response of so many vets. Perhaps they do it because their clients aren't satisfied with common sense and "home remedies" and pressure them to prescribe something. Giving a prescription drug to satisfy clients may be good business but, IMO, it's bad medicine.

Our rescue vet now sends routine spay/neuter patients home with a supply of Rimadyl, even puppies. Part of their new "we believe in pain management" philosophy. Late yesterday afternoon I picked up a pup who was castrated ealier in the afternoon; I refused the Rimadyl they had ready with his discharge paperwork. This pup is in no pain. I don't even think he feels any discomfort. In fact, his behavior is so absolutely normal that even knowing he had surgery yesterday I can't see any indication of that in his behavior, appetite, energy level, etc.
