Kuaui broke his foot - can dogs

have a lingering effect, i.e. future problems?
For those who may not remember, Kuaui is my little chihuahua 6.5yrs old, my late Lexie's best bud, well he was playing hard with my sisters chihuahua and they both ran up the stairs on the deck. Kuaui tripped and flipped head over having caught his foot.
At 1st we didn't think it was broke, but the curling of the toes and the hook like appearance made it pretty obvious.
The foot that he broke is his right rear.
Course this would happen after having lost my job a month ago.
