Posted by Antoinette Smith on 5/25/2005, 4:18 pm AVMA LAUNCHS SPECIAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST HR 503. IMMEDIATE ACTION IS NEEDED. Lobbyists from AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association; one of the main opponents to banning horse slaughter) are visiting all Congressional offices in a special campaign against HR 503, the bill pending in the US House of Representatives that would ban the slaughter of horses in the US. Using misrepresentations, lies and baseless facts portraying horse slaughter as "humane and necessary", AVMA is asking Congressmen to oppose this vital legislation and requesting its current cosponsors to withdraw their support from it, claiming that "they are vets and know what is needed". Immediate action is needed in order to avoid a loss of supporters that can lead to the failure of the bill. What can you do: Signed statements from veterinarians saying that horse slaughter is inhumane and unnecessary are urgently needed in order to counter the arguments from the AVMA. Please, ask every veterinarian you know to sign a statement in support of HR 503, affirming that horse slaughter is inhumane and unnecessary. A special support letter for veterinarians is available for download on the NHPC website at: Christopher J. Heyde

2004 Government Accounting Office (GAO) Report to Congress on the Humane Slaughter Act.
The issues in the letter for the vets to sign provided in the link provided above are more than enough! But just in case, WHOA also asks that you show the GAO graph to your vet and ask that she/he notice the first and third bars showing that animals are often conscious during slaughter. This is against The Humane Slaughter Act, which has never been enforced. This report also states that inspections are done on an unknown frequency and asks that further study be done to determine this implying they are infrequently done. This entire report is available on web at http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d04247.pdf
