I think a lot of the market collapse will come from people just being scared- scared that they will have to face the consequences of what they have created- unhandled, untrained, dangerous horses or horses these owners have allowed or caused to go lame, or left a serious wound untreated that has resulted in permanent lameness or disfigurement. After a while, they'll see that there is a market for these horses, even if the sale price is low or nonexistant. But if they want to protect their investment and keep the dollar value up at a reasonable amount, they'll have to fix what they broke before they pass it on to someone else. That being said, auctions are cesspools of misrepresentations about horses breeding, training, health & dispositions. Their as-is method of selling, with the owner usually remaining anonymous, enables people to abuse their horses and still get rewarded for it, with once again, there being no negative consequences attached.
One of my members in Oklahoma told me yesterday that the local auction has announced that after March (I can't remember the exact date, but it's the first part of the month), they won't run the horses through that are sold by weight anymore.
