Yes, you can get a train right into Saulieu if trains are your bag.
I travelled once via >Clermont-Ferrand (Ryanair)>and a whole series of local trains all connecting beautifully back in the days when Rail France operated an office in Piccadilly. That office used to be very cooperative but now in some sort of 'private' hands and are very money-oriented.
I stayed in a Youth Hostel right across from the rail station in Clermont-Ferrand and managed to get in a bus tour of the Puy de Dome volcanic region.
Lot of trouble to organise but very well worth it.
I may do it again this year but I also like to 'do' Saulieu by car.
