Err... A French-speaking friend has actually always booked my travel for me so can't give you a huge amount of detail, but fear not - Nigel Worthington has an excellent description on his website:

It is possible to get a train all the way there though (you have to change at a town called Laroche Migennes) but getting the fast train to Montbard and then a bus to Saulieu is much, much quicker.
All in all I find the journey pretty easy - the trickiest bit is crossing Paris on the underground.
