How nice to find this discussion group; I know I'll learn a lot from reading it.
Thanks, Maureen, for telling people about my Cajun Favorites for Mountain Dulcimer book. I used to live in Louisiana and have been fortunate to meet great musicians there and while working at the Augusta Heritage Center's Cajun & Creole Week. They encouraged me to play their music on the mountain dulcimer, and I like to strum it with rhythms more like the accordion than like the fiddle bow shuffle rhythms we use for old-time music. Here's a crazy interview Bob Force produced where I'm playing the two-step "The Hackberry Hop":

For some outstanding (great playing) mountain dulcimers check out these websites:
. Modern Mountain Dulcimers http://www.modernmountaindulcimer.com/
. Ron Ewing Dulcimers

I own a bunch, and I find these the most "musical." MMDs have a lot of "presence," volume, quick response. I'm playing one in the above video. Great for playing with other instruments.
Ron Ewing's have a wide dynamic range and sustain, often sound bouzouki-like, and he has them in A baritone, high D, G, and other models.
