Posted by Julian Putting them together in the wonderful new Cajun band "Petit et la Grosse", however, was a stroke of genius. With Mitch Proctor on fiddle and Chris Hall backing on bass and drums, their debut gig at the Cajun Barn last Sunday promised to be solid, but I wasn't prepared for the superb performance they gave us. The sound was authentic and polished as you'd expect, but it was also fresh and the musicians seemed to gel extraordinarily well. We know how beautiful a voice Hazel has, and how fine an accordionist Jim is, but Jim's singing and harmonies were a perfect complement, and Hazel's guitar has suddenly gone up a notch in terms of rhythmic strength. Mitch's fiddle slotted in effortlessly and with that big a sound coming from the front it needed only the smallest touch from the backline, which is precisely what Chris provided alternately on bass and drums. Catch the trio at Cajun UK next weekend or the full line-up at Bristol in October. Let's hope they manage to add some more dates to their diary so that more people can experience and enjoy the big Cajun sound of this small but perfectly formed band.

It's been wonderful to see the emergence of two talented young musicians on the cajun/zydeco scene over the past couple of years: Lil Jim and Hazel Scott. In festival guest appearances and more recently in their own bands, they've both proved that they have what it takes to play the music we love at the highest level.
