There is a correct method of safely stretching the muscles so that they lengthen without causing harm. Dynamic stretching is a term applied to a fast lengthening movement. A kick is a dynamic stretch. Holding your arm out to clothesline somebody is a dynamic stretch. A dynamic stretch simply means that the muscle is elongated with respect to its fully extended potential. -Bras
Coelho,
Many athletes, and I see this ALL THE TIME in capoeira, will attempt to hold a stretched position and bounce on the muscle. This is NOT stretching. It it not debatable. It is simply NOT CORRECT STRETCHING. It is LOADING. This is setting the muscle up for damage if not already creating fiber tears. When the muscle is exposed to a bouncy stretch, it TENSES UP. If the GOAL of STRETCHING is ELONGATING and OPENING the muscle, and holding a STATIC STRETCH and BOUNCING causes the muscle to SHORTEN and TIGHTEN you are achieving the EXACT OPPOSITE of the desired effect. If your goal happens to be injuring yourself at some point in the future, then rock on.
