Posted by Jennifer on 6/3/2006, 10:06 am http://www.whokilledpixote.com/ Jose Joffily's film highlights the brutal hardships facing the young star of Hector Babenco's seminal work on youth gang violence in Brazil, who finds himself the victim of street violence. The film brilliantly exposes the depth of poverty among the millions of street children in Brazil. Fernando Ramos Da Silva gained worldwide fame and recognition at the age of 11 when he became the notable star of Hector Babenco's 1980 film "Pixote". A youth from the San Paolo favela Diadema, Da Silva grew to believe his life would be changed forever. However, the scarcity of roles and his social and class handicaps such as persisting poverty and illiteracy prevented him from developing an acting career. Based on the events of his life as they are recounted in Babenco's "Pixote", "The Law of the Strongest" by Brazilian journalist Loueiro, and "Pixote No More" by Cida Venancio Da Silva, this film pictorially captures the prevailing context of poverty and injustice that controls the destiny of many "Pixotes", the street children of Brazilian ghettos."
