It has also been said that originally when the Doberman was used for protection (guard duty) that by cropping the ears, an individual would have a harder time grabbing a cropped ear as opposed to the floppy natural ear. As for the docked tail, which is normally done at 3 days of age, it has been said that Dobermans, which are very well known for wagging their "behinds", would tend to break their tails, which in turn would end up having to have the tail docked. I suppose you could also use the same explanation for the ears as it is more difficult to grab a hold of that little stub than a tail. As for the look of the Doberman, many feel the cropped look is a much more cleaner look as opposed to the natural ear. I, myself, prefer the cropped look. All in all, the Doberman is a beautiful dog inside and out.
