He called her and she appeared. She stood in all of her splendor and glory. She was at His service and she was ready. Every muscle in her body tensed
with anticipation. He smiled at her. "Its time. You must leave me now. You will know when the time comes, and I will be there." She nodded and said,
"Yes, Master."
The snow fell quietly but it was so cold. The woman walked the streets in the darkness longing for shelter. She didn't know which was worse, the cold or the pain that she felt stabbing through her body. She longed for the days when she sat at a table with her family. She remembered the smiling faces. This was Christmas, wasn't it? She remembered the happy times. But they were all gone. All gone now. . .
She struggled along, stopping momentarily to steady herself. "I've got to find some shelter soon. Its almost time. I don't think I can take another
step! I don't think I can make it. Oh God! Please help me!" she prayed with bowed head. When she looked up, she saw a shadow in what appeared to be a fog. The voice spoke to her and said, "Follow me." She headed towards the voice and in the snow, she saw prints but they were not human prints. They
were paw prints. "What strange animal is leading me?" She wondered. She plodded along trusting God, trusting her heart and trusting the animal.
The animal headed to a vacant building. The animal had taken her into the building out of the wind and cold. "Where are you?" She called. She couldn't
see the animal. She gasped. The pain was worse, she doubled over. "Here." Came the voice. She made her way to the door and opened it into the room.
Somehow, it seemed warmer in here. It was dark with the exception of the street light that shone through a broken window.
The woman screamed! The pain was unbearable now. She fell to the ground. The animal rushed to her side and placed her head on her shoulders. A light
appeared and a different voice said, "I am with you, do not be afraid. I am here to comfort you."
He was on patrol that evening. He HATED walking a beat! Stuff like this was for losers! What had he done to deserve this type of service on Christmas
Eve! Geeze! He was thinking about his wife and little girl waiting for him at home. He shivered. Nothing is going on tonight, not on this street. This is the devil's duty!
He looked up and she stood before him. A golden light shone around her. He couldn't believe his eyes! "My God! Where did she come from??" He slowly drew out his revolver. She took several steps towards him and he backed up. She ran away silently beckoning him to follow her. "This is WEIRD!" He thought. "Can't let one of them run the street tonight!" So he followed her. She ran quickly down the street and cut the corner with the speed of lightening. He followed but there was no way he could keep up with her. She ran like the
wind. He had never seen anything like it. He put his revolver back in his holster. Finally, he followed the paw prints.
He came to the building. It was silent. There was no noise at all. He didn't see which direction she had taken. He didn't know where she was. Suppose she was waiting to jump him?? He slowly drew his revolver. His heart beat loudly in his chest. For the first time in a long time, he was afraid. He didn't want to hurt her, but he sure as heck didn't want her to hurt him!
He turned on his flashlight and walked slowly and quietly in the building. He saw nothing. He heard nothing. He ran the light all around the big room,
nothing. There was a door. It was closed, but he thought he heard something, something familiar, something muffled?? A noise? He walked quietly to the door and reached for the knob. He held his breath. Suppose she sprang on top of him? She was big, she was powerful, she was quick!!! His heartbeat quickened.
He cocked his gun, he turned the knob and opened the door. Sweat beaded up on his forehead. He heard it again. It was a small cry. A cry of discomfort, a cry from the cold, a cry of hunger. He took his flashlight and went around the room. Over in the corner he saw it and he fell back against the wall in astonishment! He saw the woman. He saw the small, tiny baby. He saw her laying there next to them and the light around her was still golden. Her body was pressed up against the baby, keeping him warm. Her head was laying on the
woman's chest. But her eyes were on him.
There was no voice, but she spoke to his heart. "I am a Doberman. I was created by God. I was sent to earth to protect this woman and this baby, that
is my mission. I was told to find you and bring you to them. You, Sir, have just witnessed a miracle."
His mouth widened in disbelief. She stood. He looked at her in awe. She was magnificent! She was elegant! She was definitely sent by God. He reached for his radio and called for an ambulance. When he looked up, she had disappeared!
"You've done well, I am proud of you!" He said. "Thank you, Master. I am here to serve," she smiled. "I know that." He replied. "Now go, run with the pack at the Rainbow Bridge. You have work to do there." She smiled, and as she laughed she said, "Yes! Master!" And off she ran.
Let us remember that the Holidays are not just for giving gifts to our loved ones but giving of ourselves to those less fortunate than we. It is what makes our hearts smile.
