'58 CHP Mercuries

Having grown up in California, I remember that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) had a fleet of '58 Mercury 2-door sedans. They were black with white doors and, if memory serves, had '56 Mercury full wheel covers (the concentric-circle ones, possibly on oversized wheels?). In addition, the gold "M" in the center of the grill was replaced with a white spotlight.
Does anyone else remember these cars? Have any survived? Were they Montereys or Medalists, and what engine/trans. did they have?
