State Leaders Decorated by Orthodox Patriarch. Sofia, May 10 (BTA) - Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and National Assembly Chairman Ognyan Gerdjikov were decorated by Patriarch Maksim Saturday with the Order of the Holy King Boris the Baptist, First Class. The ceremony was held during a Holy Convention Service in Sofia's St Nedelya Church, marking the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the Bulgarian Patriarchate. The service was also attended by Petros VII, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Patriarch Pavle of Serbia, and international clerical delegations which have been in Sofia since Friday. Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov and other officials also attended the service. The Prime Minister read "Symbol of Faith," a prayer which does not belong to the body of church service texts and therefore can be read by a lay guest. "For the persistently stubborn we grieve, and our Holy Church keeps open the door to its illuminated quarters, awaiting them to succumb to the power of repentance and humility and join the flock of Christ," says a Synodal and Patriarchal Message in connection with the Bulgarian Church rift. The anniversary is celebrated separately by the Holy Synod and the supporters of Metropolitan Inokentii of Sofia. The latter community is expected to hold a service in the St Sophia Church later in the day. The Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church has received a greetings message from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, in which he, too, urges Inokentii and his men to rejoin the true Church. Patriarch Petros VII, Patriarch Pavle, Patriarch Maksim, and the visiting delegation leaders will be received by President Purvanov, Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and Parliament Chairman Gerdjikov. Christianity became the official religion in Bulgaria under King Boris I in 865. For several decades Bulgaria was under the jurisdiction of the Constantinople Patriarchate. The Bulgarian Patriarchate was destroyed after Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule in late 14th century. Following continuous struggles for independence it was reinstated in 1870. Incumbent Patriarch Maksim was elected to this position in 1971, following the death of Patriarch Kiril. ------------------ Orthodoxy Paid Respect to Bulgarian Church.
