
Posted by N Istanbul, April 27 (BTA Exclusive by Metin Karagyullyu) - The Bulgarians living in Istanbul marked Easter on Sunday. An Easter liturgy was served at the St John of Rila Church within the Bulgarian Exarchate. Attending the ceremony were 500 people. Tourists had come by buses from Bulgaria for the observances. Father Milko Topuzliev performed the solemn ceremony. The choir sang religious songs. Sunday afternoon the observances continued in the St Stephen Church that is opened only on St Stephen's Day and on Easter. During talks with the congregation it emerged that an increasingly higher number of people tend to come from Bulgaria to spend the Easter and Christmas holidays in Istanbul. The Bulgarian community in Istanbul numbers some 500 people. However, during the National Revival period (18-19th century) the town was a venue of Bulgarian intellectuals.
