The repairs will be done in compliance with an agreement between the Bulgarian and the Turkish government on reciprocal protection of monuments of culture. The agreement provides for maintenance and repair of the Bulgarian churches in Turkey and of Turkish mosques in Bulgaria. Father Alexander Chakuruk of the Church of St. George tells "Turkiye" that the Bulgarian side has provided 80,000 dollars but the repairs were delayed by formalities. The Church of St. George was built in 1880 and has been abandoned for years because there has been no strong Bulgarian community to take care of it. In another project, the space around the Church of St. Konstantin and Elena in the Kirishane district will be landscaped.
