"The Holy Synod follows with concern and apprehension the events taking place in the Holy Lands, in particular in Bethlehem, the birthplace of our Saviour Lord Jesus Christ, where God's precious gift - human life - is being taken away forcibly and world spiritual and cultural heritage is being destroyed," reads the statement. At a special meeting April 24 the members of the Holy Synod discussed these events "connected with the spread of armed conflict in the Holy Lands in the State of Israel and the Palestinian Autonomy". The Holy Synod calls on "all responsible people, acting within their competence and according to their conscience, to do what is necessary to put an end to bloody conflicts in that region, prevent the violation of the unique status of the Holy Lands by transient moods and respect the rights of reach religious faith to have its holy places of worship." The statement is in connection with the Israeli occupation of Bethlehem in the Palestinian Autonomy since the beginning of the month and the siege of the Church of the Nativity. --------------------------------------------------------------------- In this handout photo distributed by the Israel Defense Forces, an Israeli soldier shakes hands with a monk as he delivers medication to the Church of the Nativity in the West Bank town of Bethlehem Wednesday April 17, 2002. According to a Defense Ministry official, Israel will remain in Bethlehem and Ramallah until standoffs there over the surrender of wanted Palestinians have been resolved, but will try to withdraw troops from other areas by early next week.
