In 1871 Count Ignatiev, Russian ambassador in Tsarigrad (Istanbul), informed the Russian government in St. Petersburg of the establishing of the Bulgarian Exarchate and the election of Antim I.
In 1878 the formation of the first Bulgarian Combatant Sapper's Company was ordered.
