It seems to me that Joe lived his life in denial, from the point in time that he played sick and allowed flawed parts to be shipped for use in planes that were flown in the war. Possibly as a result of the flawed parts, his own son was killed in action. When forced to finally face what he did, and the subsequent death of his son, coupled with effect of that action on his surviving son, he felt that he no longer deserved to be alive. His surviving son has lived his life believing his father to be a great man, has respected and loved him, and when his son finds out what his father did, he disowns Joe, and the potential loss of his only remaining child is too much for him to bear, and as a result, he takes his life.
That's my take on it ... I'd be interested to hear yours as well!
