SEVENTH READING – ODYSSEUS and CIRCE
CIRCE
I know what you’re going to say.
ODYSSEUS
My men plead with me night and day. They long for home.
CIRCE
Then they can go. But you could stay, Odysseus. You could live with me here.
ODYSSEUS
I could. But my heart begs me to leave.
CIRCE
Think of the times we’ve had. We’ve bathed in the sacred streams, lazed in the afternoons on cushions of purple silk. Eaten from silver plates. Sipped wine from gold cups.
ODYSSEUS
Circe…
CIRCE (whispering)
We’ve fallen asleep together under the stars, woken on thick fleeces, taken whatever we pleased, wanted for nothing…
ODYSSEUS
With every day that passes it gets harder to leave…
CIRCE
Whatever you’ve asked for, I’ve given. It’s all yours, Odysseus. Why deny what you most desire…
POLITES (from afar)
Odysseus, the wind fills the sails. The men are waiting for orders. Odysseus?
CIRCE
Odysseus, Odysseus…You’ve feasted on fantasy with me. You still want more. You crave me…
ODYSSEUS
You whisper your magic in my ear. You swore an oath.
CIRCE
You’ll tear my heart out of you leave. And you’ll leave your own heart here with me.
ODYSSEUS
If I stay you’ll have broken your word. What will I feel about you then?
