FOURTH READING – EURYCLEIA and PENELOPE
EURYCLEIA
My lady. Forgive me.
PENELOPE
Forgive you for what? Are the suitors striking for more food? Are they screaming like baby birds, can’t we feed them quick enough? Well, open the doors of the granary and the vaults where the meats are kept cold. Let them gorge till they burst.
EURYCLEIA
If only they’d stuffed themselves silly, then maybe I wouldn’t be standing here like this.
PENELOPE
Standing like what?
EURYCLEIA
Like the thing that I am, a raggedy old woman with bad news.
PENELOPE
What bad news?
EURYCLEIA
Don’t hate me for it…
PENELOPE
Spit it out.
EURYCLEIA
It’s Telemachus. He’s gone.
PENELOPE
Gone where?
EURYCLEIA
Sailed off in search of his father. He was overheard on the beach, making plans. And seen at the front of a ship as it left the bay.
PENELOPE
Without telling me? Without saying…
EURYCLEIA
And there’s worse, my lady. Oh, don’t be hating me for this.
PENELOPE
Say all of it. Tell it on one piece.
EURYCLEIA
Those slavering letches downstairs. Those drooling mongrels not fit to kiss the soles of your shoes. They’re planning…
PENELOPE
All of it.
EURYCLEIA
…planning his death. They’ll lie in wait between the rocks. Cut him off on his way back. Meet his body with bronze spears. They say he’ll never set foot on his homeland again. Oh my lady…
