The Boys Next Door is a comedy about the joy of life. The story does concern a group of adults, some of whom are classified as having different levels of mental retardation. However, it is not a heavy show, but rather a celebration of life. They are basically a very happy group of people who choose to participate to the best of their ability in everything the world throws their way. This play chronicles their daily lives, living as simple men in a very complicated world.
The Players: Characters may range in age from late 20s to late 50s. Actors must be capable of playing age-appropriate to the character; actual actor age is inconsequential.
Arnold Wiggins -- Manic depressive, a compulsive chatterer, suffering a persecution complex and deep-seated feelings of inferiority.
Barry Klemper -- A brilliant schizophrenic devastated and traumatized by the rejection of his brutal father; fantasizes that he is a golf pro.
Lucien P. Smith -- An African-American grown man with the mind of a 5-year old; believes he can read the stack of heavy agricultural books he lugs about; a sweet child in a man’s body.
Norman Bulansky – An overweight, mentally retarded man who works in a donut shop and has a serious attachment to his keys.
Jack Palmer -- The social worker charged with looking after “the boys.” While Jack is deeply attached to these special men, he is, unfortunately, on the verge of serious career burnout.
Sheila -- Also mentally retarded, overweight, and is on a mission to get Norman’s keys. Sheila is Norman’s “girlfriend.”
Mr. Klemper -- Barry’s father, a coarse, classless man with a violent temper.
Female Actor -- Portrays multiple cameo characters -- Mrs. Fremus, Mrs. Warren and Clara
Male Actor -- Portrays multiple cameo characters -- Mr. Hedges, Mr. Corbin and Senator Clarke
General Information: No audition appointment is necessary. There are no fees charged to audition. Bring a resume or photo if you have them, but a professional resume/headshot/acting experience is NOT necessary to audition.
